UNREBUILDABLE CARBURETORS
|||||||||||||||||
This weeks article is on carbs that have pretty much had it as far as being rebuildable,most of the time you will find this to be on the kohler engines, since it is one of the few downfalls the magnificent kohler has, especially on the newer model kohler engines equipped with bowl type carbs.A typical symptom is the lack of idle speed,running fine at open throttle, but when you idle down,the engine revs up and down.

What causes this is the butterfly actually wears out.You have two butterflies in the carb, a choke and a throttle butterfly.The throttle butterfly or rod the butterfly is attached to with two screws is what wears over time from moving back and forth.It will have a substantial amount of side play in the shaft causing it to flutter when at idle, causing the engine to rev up and down or shut off all together and as I SAID IT IS TYPICAL ON KOHLER ENGINES for this to go bad.The actual cast inside the carb where the rod that holds the butterfly actually wears, so replacing the rod and butterfly does no good.THE ONLY TRUE FIX IS TO REPLACE THE CARB WITH A NEW ONE OR A USED ONE.

I have seen this on several kohlers and a few briggs will do this, mostly its the walbro type carburetors that give this trouble,so if you run into an idle problem and adjusting the carb does no good, you might want to check your throttle butterfly for excess play, side to side motion on a bowl type carb.
